Mayor David Merchant has been networking and getting to know the Sumter community more in depth now that he has taken over as mayor since the November election.
One of those meetings may stand out above the rest, literally, as he was taken on an immersion flight recently at Shaw Air Force Base.
Col. Larry Sullivan, commander of the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw, pilot Merchant himself in his F-16 that showed him Sumter from above, and the two-hour mission even took them all the way to Virginia.
