Sumter Today: Tropical Storm Elsa is approaching South Carolina and the Midlands this afternoon

Posted

Tropical Storm Elsa is approaching South Carolina and the Midlands this afternoon, and the area should be prepared for heavy rain and tropical storm force winds tonight.
Heavy rainfall is the biggest threat in our area, with up to 3 inches mainly in the eastern Midlands possible.
The time for the worst weather will probably be overnight but will last into midday Thursday.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Elsa had maximum sustained winds that have decreased to near 50 miles per hour, and tropical storm force winds extend up to 70 miles from the center.
Because of the weather threat, Clarendon School District 4 schools and offices will be closed tomorrow in Summerton and Turbeville.
