Sumter's Barnes picks up first Triple-A win

Pitcher Charlie Barnes recently won his first game for the Minnesota Twins' Triple A affiliate in Rochester, New York, after being promoted from Double-A Pensacola.

The left-hander out of Sumter High School earned the victory in his Aug. 15 start with the Rochester Red Wings in a road game against Indianapolis. He allowed seven hits and two earned runs in five innings and struck out five.

The 23-year-old did not earn a decision in his first start after being promoted on Aug. 9. It was the second promotion of the season for Barnes, who started the year with High Single-A Fort Myers.

More baseball

Wilson Hall graduate JP Sears has been on the injured 7-day list since July 18. The pitcher has a 4-4 win-loss record, one save and a 4.07 earned run average in 13 games for the New York Yankees' High Single-A club.

Through 86 games for the Milwaukee Brewers' Double-A affiliate, Bruce Caldwell had a .2309 batting average with nine home runs and 45 runs batted in. The second baseman is out of Sumter High.

Southern Maryland of the independent Atlantic League signed free agent outfielder Travis Witherspoon on July 26. The former Gamecock hit .067 with two RBIs through 13 games.

Football

Coastal Carolina wide receiver Ky'Jon Tyler is on the Phil Steele preseason all-Sun Belt Conference third team and Athlon Sports preseason all-Sun Belt fourth team. The redshirt senior competed for the Gamecocks.

Past Gamecock Eric Watts is a freshman defensive lineman for University of Connecticut.

Lakewood High product Malik Richardson is a freshman quarterback for Western Carolina University.

Previously at Crestwood High, Joshua Simon is a freshman tight end for Western Kentucky University.

Men's basketball

Juwan Perdue is a freshman forward for Jacksonville State University. He is out of Lakewood.

Men's soccer

Crestwood alumnus Zeke Workman is a freshman for Emory & Henry College in Virginia.

Women's basketball

Brittany Starling led UNINASSAU Basquete in Brazil with 22 points and added five rebounds in a semifinals Game 3 loss. The Sumter graduate averaged 12.5 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 12 games.
