Sumter's Heyward takes 2nd in long jump at 5A state meet

COLUMBIA - Sumter High School's Ja'Kheem Heyward finished second in the long jump in the 5A track and field state championships at Spring Valley High's Harry Parone Stadium.

The long jump event was held on Friday. Heyward took second with a jump of 24 feet, 2 inches.

On Saturday, Heyward ran a leg on the 4x100-meter relay team that also finished second in a time of 41.46 seconds. Joining Heyward were Anthony Dinkins-McCall, Lodaine Redwood and Melvin Lundy.

The 4x400 team of Redwood, Theron Bradford, Dylan Vance and Keron Benbow finished sixth.

Dalzell-Shaw tryouts start Monday

The Dalzell-Shaw Post 175 American Legion baseball team will have tryouts for the upcoming season beginning on Monday at 5 p.m. at Thomas Sumter Academy's General Field.

The tryouts are open to players ages 13-19 with the birth years of 2000 to 2006.

The Jets will play their season opener against Sumter on May 28 at Riley Park.

Clarendon Hall goes 2-2

The Clarendon Hall softball team went 2-2 in the 1A state tournament held on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday at Palmetto Park, the Lady Saints beat Wardlaw 22-9 before losing to St. John's Christian 12-2 in the second game.

On Saturday at Patriot Park SportPlex, CH beat Andrew Jackson Academy 7-6 before losing to Dorchester Academy 14-0.

Clarendon Hall finishes the year at 11-9.

USC 11

Kentucky 3

COLUMBIA - South Carolina won its first Southeastern Conference series of the season on Saturday, beating Kentucky 11-3 at Founders Park to take the first two games of the 3-game series.

USC won 5-4 on Friday. The final game is set for an 11 a.m. start on Sunday. It will be televised on the SEC Network and will be carried on WNKT-FM 107.5.

South Carolina improved to 26-24 on the season and 7-19 in SEC play. Kentucky dropped to 24-26 and 6-20.

Reid Morgan pitched six innings to get the win.

TJ Hopkins, Brady Allen and Wes Clarke hit home runs for the Gamecocks. Allen also had two doubles and three runs batted in. Clarke added a double as well.

Clemson 4

N.C. State 3

RALEIGH, N.C. - Sam Hall's 2-out single in the 10th inning scored Kyle Wilkie to break a 3-3 tie and lift Clemson to a 4-3 win over No. 16 North Carolina State on Saturday at Doak Field.

The Tigers, who evened the series at 1-1, improved to 30-21 overall and 13-13 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack dropped to 38-14 overall and 15-11 in ACC play.

The final game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
