Superintendent search, facilities study before Sumter school board

A superintendent search update and a facilities study report highlight Sumter School District's Board of Trustees' regular monthly meeting set for Monday night at Alice Drive Elementary School.

A district spokeswoman distributed a meeting agenda last week.

Board Chairman the Rev. Ralph Canty will provide the superintendent search update from consulting firm B.W.P. and Associates, which is helping the board in the national search process for the district's next leader.

The firm's timeline is for the board to name its new superintendent in March with a start date of July 1 or sooner.

Interim Superintendent Debbie Hamm is in her second and final year with the district.

Another consulting firm, Cumming Corp., based out of Columbia, will present findings from its district facilities assessment study of all the district's schools.

That study included a comprehensive look at the inside and outside areas at the district's schools and all ancillary buildings. The assessments factored in the age of buildings and equipment and will categorize schools by priority of construction needs.

District administration said a facilities study of this magnitude had not been performed in the district before. The district paid Cumming $199,553 for the study.

The report has been complete for a while, but this will be the first time it's presented to the board.

With five new board members elected in the November general election, the nine-member board's meeting that month was a re-organizational meeting. At that meeting, Canty, the chairman, also tabled board committee appointments until the December meeting.

The Dec. 10 meeting also included the district's annual audit report and a motion from a new board member to eliminate and restructure committees.

Monday's meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Alice Drive Elementary, 251 Alice Drive. Like all board-related meetings, the public is invited to attend, and public participation is also listed on the agenda.
