Sylvia Ann Lawler, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, at home in Sumter, after a struggle with metastatic cancer. She was surrounded by family, wonderful caregivers and hospice care.

Sylvia was married for 37 years to James P. Lawler, before he passed away in 2016. Sylvia was born on Nov. 30, 1934, in Morgantown, West Virginia, to the late Joseph and Abeline Mike. She graduated from St. Francis High School, Morgantown. She earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Ursaline College, Louisville, Kentucky, and a Master's of Library Science degree from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Sylvia was a teacher and librarian in Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and at Sumter Catholic School in Sumter. She was a member of St. Anne / St. Jude Catholic Church in Sumter and involved in many of the church committees. She was an active member of the Sumter County Museum, Friends of the Sumter County Library, treasurer of the Tuesday Club that meets on Thursday, and treasurer for many years of the Heart of Sumter Neighborhood Association.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Joy Prendergast; brother-in-law, John P. Lawler of Louisville; sister-in-law, Mary Fogarty of Louisville; and sister-in-law, Diana Schmidt of Cincinnati, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Bullock Funeral Home with wake service being held at 7:30 p.m.
