The teen drove through the intersection of Reona Avenue and Wilma Court as unidentified individuals reportedly fired multiple shots after midnight, according to Adrienne Sarvis, public information officer at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The teen was treated at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, and this is the only injury reported from the incident.
Residents in the area reported property damage, Sarvis said.
“Any time there is a shooting incident like this in a residential area, innocent people could get hurt,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said. “Although the victim was not seriously injured, this should not have happened in the first place. We ask that citizens call law enforcement any time there is a shooting in a residential area.”
After responding to eight fatal shootings in 2018, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office has already responded to 11 homicides so far this year. Some have been related to gang activity, others have been isolated incidents.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (803) 436-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Information can also be submitted electronically and anonymously at www.P3tips.com.
