Church Women United-Greater Sumter Area annual May Friendship Day which was planned for May 7 at Union Station AME Church has been cancelled.

The regularly scheduled meeting of Clarendon County Council, scheduled for April 13, has been postponed until April 27. The location will remain the same.

Gov. Henry McMaster expanded the list of nonessential businesses that must close.

Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands has canceled its 11th Walk A Mile In Their Shoes scheduled for April 23, and offices are closed. Last year's event fundraiser was also canceled due to threatening calls to the agency. It is still asking for donations to continue its mission of advocating for survivors of sexual assault in Sumter, Clarendon, Richland, Lexington and Newberry counties. All non-essential businesses must close by 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, according to an executive order from Gov. Henry McMaster.

The Iris Festival scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, has been canceled. It would have been the 80th year for the state's longest continuously running festival in the state.

The Shaw Air and Space Expo scheduled for May 15-17 has been canceled. No new date has been set.

Eta Zeta Omega has canceled the annual fundraiser Pink Pizzazz Gala. The event was set for Friday, May 29 at the Sumter County Civic Center.

The annual members meeting for Oswego Rural Water Co. scheduled for Monday, April 13, has been cancelled. The company will notifiy its members of the new date for the meeting.

The S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles issued new guidelines extending expiration dates for registration renewals, IDs, driver's licenses and other requirements through July 1.

Only mission-essential personnel will be allowed on Fort Jackson beginning March 30.

Sumter United Ministries has changed its hours of operation. The ministry will be open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m.-noon on Friday. "We're still open. I'm hoping to keep our stuff in this for the long run," said Mark Champagne, executive director of Sumter United Ministries. Champange said they may close on Fridays in the near future, but they will continue to serve the community as normal as possible and are still taking donations. More updates will be posted at www.sumterunitedministries.org.

All City of Sumter, Sumter County and South Carolina State Parks are being closed in response to COVID-19. City and county parks are closed effective immediately and until further notice. Earlier directives canceling all large-group gatherings and closing playground equipment remain in place. State parks will be closed through April 30 beginning Saturday, March 28,

(Announcements and changes made  Wednesday, March 25)

Central Carolina Technical College’s May 2020 graduation ceremonies have been postponed, as have all health care pinning ceremonies. The college is looking at alternative options. CCTC will provide more information once details are known regarding next steps. Students who have applied and are eligible for graduation will receive additional information in their CCTC email account.

(Announcements and changes made Tuesday, March 24)

Clarendon Hall will remain closed through April 30 and will continue with online learning. That includes the cancellation of the junior/senior prom scheduled for April 9 and May Day Program scheduled for April 26, though alternative plans are being explored. Students will observe the scheduled spring break April 10-19, and no assignments will be due during that period. The deadline to register for the 2020-2021 school year is Wednesday, April 1.  Mail forms and the registration forms to P.O. Box 609 Summerton, SC 29148-0609.  All other deadlines stated in the enrollment forms for 2020-2021 still apply.

Sumter School District will remain closed through the end of April, with online learning continuing.

Continental Tire of Americas’ Sumter plant is shutting down for two weeks.

On behalf of the Sumter Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina, the 15th-Annual Barbecue Fundraiser that was scheduled for Saturday, April 4 at the North Hope Center from 10a.m. to noon will be re-scheduled. Contact president Debra Canty at (803) 775-57092 or a member of the chapter if you have any questions.

Palmetto Goodwill is suspending retail operations at all 31 stores throughout their 18-county territory until April 13. Donations will continue to be collected during the closure, though without attendants. All Goodwill stores have donation drive-thru canopies where bins will be placed to accept goods. Once full, these self-service donations bins will be quarantined for a period before ever entering a sales area. Anyone wanting a donation receipt can contact the store post-COVID-19, and the store will honor all receipt requests.

The Harvin Clarendon County Library has digital materials accessible 24/7 with a library card. Materials include e-books, audiobooks, movies and www.Tutor.com for students. Clarendon County residents who don’t have a library card can get a temporary card to access these digital items for the next 60 days. To get a card, visit www.clarendoncountylibrary.com and send a message through the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of the page.

The Lee County School District Board of Trustees will not hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, March 26.

State parks in South Carolina will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, March 25 and 26, to evaluate new procedures and policies as the state continues to face the coronavirus. All 47 state parks will be open Friday to Tuesday. In an attempt to reduce waiting periods at fee booths, parks are also allowing people to purchase admission online at https://scparkstore.com/collections/park-admission.

Sumter’s Historic Preservation Design Review Committee meeting scheduled for March 26 has been postponed.

Shaw Air Force Base is only conducting risk-balanced operations. Only active duty, their dependents and those who work on Shaw can get on base. Retirees with a medical appointment/emergency and delivery workers still have access.

The Shaw AFB BX Pharmacy is closed until further notice. Information about prescription transfer or delivery service is available at the link to the official Shaw AFB website, or call (803) 895-6464 / 1309 / 6466 / 6125.

The Shaw AFB bowling alley and golf course are closed until further notice.

Sumter School District will be delivering breakfast and lunch through its snatch-a-snack process through Tuesday, March 24.

  • Meals can be picked up, one or two at a time, in the pick-up area of each school between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • According to the district, buses will deliver meals starting at 10 a.m. to the following areas: New Bethel Church, Pack Road, Crescent Mobile Homes, American Mobile Homes, DeLaine Community Center, Rembert Post Office, Rembert Community Center, Sherwood Forest, Pisgah Crossroads, Wedgefield Post Office, Shiloh Community Center, Mayesville Post Office, Catchall Center, Ebenezer Center, Frierson Mobile Homes, Windsor City, Birnie Hope Center, South Hope Center, North Hope Center, Jehovah Center, Trinity Baptist Church, Salterstown Center, Iris Winds and Dillon Park.
  • Information regarding the distribution of meals for the rest of the week will be communicated as they develop.
  • If students or parents need technology support, call (803) 469-6900, extensions 406, 116 or 137, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For IT support in Spanish, call extension 211.
  • If you encounter a technology issue after 4 p.m. or over the weekend, email a short description of the problem and a call back number to studentsupport@sumterschools.net.
  • Teachers are available to students during normal school hours, and school offices are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to assist with questions.

MUSC Health is following these further visitor policies:

  • For adult patients (University Hospital, University Hospital Extension and ART), visitors are not permitted in the building unless the physician feels a patient is at the end of life.  At that time, a family member, friend or other caregiver will be contacted to be at the bedside. No more than two of these individuals may be present at a time. Exceptions may be made by hospital administration based on ongoing patient safety needs. Daily screening will continue to take place at designated hospital entrances.
  • For pediatric patients and patients in labor (MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion), only two parents, legal guardians or caregivers at a time will be permitted at the bedside with their child. No other family members will be permitted into the hospital or allowed to visit. For pregnant mothers, one significant other will be permitted to enter the hospital or be at the mother’s bedside.

All City of Manning facilities, excluding the Manning Police Department, are closed to the public. This includes all city-operated public parks.

(Announcements and changes made Saturday, March 21)

Beginning Monday, March 23, Bank of Clarendon branches in Manning, Santee Summerton and Sumter will be offering drive-through banking only, until further notice. Financial services will be temporarily suspended at the Wyboo branch. Customers can contact their nearest branch for assistance with accessing safe deposit boxes or loan services.

Skate Station of Sumter has paused all operations.

All Sumter County buildings will be closed to the general public beginning Monday, March 23. County employees will still report to work. Services will be provided through online portals, over the phone or by U.S. Mail. First try to conduct business online and then call the department if needed.

(Announcements and changes made Friday, March 20)

Beginning Monday, March 23, transactions at SAFE Federal Credit Union branches will be limited to drive-throughs and ATMs only. All 17 of its branches will close their lobbies. Drive-through hours will be extended to 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekdays. For branches with weekend drive-through availability, Saturday hours will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. In recent months, the credit union also expanded availability of its call center, which is accessible Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. ATMs remain fully accessible, including its six Personal Teller Machines, which offer face-to-face teller access during normal business hours. For branches with safe deposit boxes, access will be available by appointment by calling (803) 469-8600.

Sumter County Disabilities and Special Needs Board will not meet on Tuesday, March 24, at Citizens Bank as was scheduled.

Starting Monday, March 23, all Sumter County government buildings will be closed to the public. Staff will continue working over the phone, by email and other media. The Voter Registration Office will continue with candidate filing, and making an appointment first to avoid a build-up of people in the office is recommended.

The Sumter Item’s Best of Sumter 2020, originally scheduled for April 30, will be rescheduled, as all city events are indefinitely on hold. We look forward to celebrating with our Best of Sumter 2020 winners, and we will communicate an official timeline as soon as we can. The S.C. Department of Agriculture is closing all physical office locations to the public. The department’s three state farmers markets (in West Columbia, Florence and Greenville) remain open for regular business. The agency urges South Carolinians to support local farmers during this time of crisis. SCDA staff are available by phone and email, with many working remotely. Staff will continue accepting deliveries via UPS, USPS and FedEx. Laboratory samples and hemp permit applications can still be dropped off at the Consumer Protection Division facility at 123 Ballard Court in West Columbia.

All S.C. Department of Natural Resources-managed shooting ranges will close starting Friday, March 20 at 3 p.m. The ranges, including Belfast, James O. Thomason, Palachucola, Pickens County, Twin Ponds, Webb and Wateree, will be closed until further notice.

Lee County established a hotline for questions regarding county services or other information related to the coronavirus emergency. Call (803) 484-5921 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The Lee County Veterans’ Affairs Office is closed to office visitors but is still providing a number of services. Call (803) 484-5129 or email requests to leecountyvaoffice@gmail.com. There is a drop box located at the VA Office for leaving any forms or requests for assistance. The mailing address is P.O. Box 461, Bishopville, SC 29010.

The Lee County DSS and DHS Office is not allowing public access to the building. Use the following information to reach the office you need:

The appointment lines are seeing over a 300% increase in calls; we ask for your patience.

Starting next week, the Shaw AFB bowling alley and golf course will no longer be open.

Starting Friday, March 20 at 7 a.m. visitors will no longer be allowed in Prisma Health hospitals. This includes the Emergency Department, procedure areas and inpatient areas. Exceptions where one visitor per patient are allowed include pediatrics patients, obstetrics patients, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit patients and end-of-life events. Children younger than 18 will not be allowed as visitors.

All Southeastern Grocers stores, which includes the Bi-LO in Sumter, will close nightly at 8 p.m. beginning Friday, March 20.

All Synovus branches will convert to drive-through and appointment-only beginning Friday, March 20. Drive-through capabilities at all branches have expanded, and lobby services can be scheduled by dialing the branch, completing a request on www.Synovus.com or by calling Synovus’ Customer Care Center at 1-888-796-6887. Synovus’ Customer Care Center, full-service ATMs, and My Synovus online and mobile banking channels remain fully operational, and www.Synovus.com has up-to-date information about operations and services.

Georgia Theatre Company is closing all its theaters, which includes Beacon Cinemas on Broad Street in Wesmark Plaza. Tickets already purchased online can be refunded at www.GTCmovies.com/refunds. Tickets bought in-person at the theater or on the GTC app should contact Beacon Cinema or email CustomerService@GTCmovies.com prior to the showtime on the ticket.

All Black River Electric lobbies are closed. Drive-thru services and kiosks will remain open in both Sumter and Camden. The company strongly encourage members to keep up with payments so bills are manageable when things resume to normal. Call them before heading to their office, and there is a deal they can help you with over the phone. You can also complete services online and through the mobile app. No in-home services such as audits will be offered at this time. The Annual Meeting of members, scheduled previously for next month, has been rescheduled for June 20. You can reach Member Services at (803) 469-8060 or online at www.blackriver.coop.

SAFE Federal Credit Union's Camden and Lugoff branches will be limited to drive-throughs and ATMS only. Safe deposit box access will be available to members by appointment by calling the SAFE switchboard at (803) 469-8600. Except for its Camden and Lugoff locations, all other SAFE branches remain fully accessible and are operating under normal business hours.

The South Carolinia Democratic Party Chairman Trav Robertson has postponed all remaing county conventions. Therefore, the Clarendon County Convention that was scheduled for Thursday, March 19, at the Clarendon County Courthouse has been canceled.  Additional information will be provided for delegates and alternates to the county convention at a later date on how convention business will be conducted.

Sumter Family YMCA will close starting Wednesday and will tentatively reopen on Wednesday, April 1. A small contingency of staff will be working to clean the facility and provide Wcommunication to members and program participants.

Westside Baptist Church has canceled all church services until further notice.

Gamecock Lanes is closed beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday through April 1.

The Harvin Clarendon County Library closed at noon Tuesday and will remain closed until further notice. Online resources are available to patrons 24/7 at www.clarendoncountylibrary.com, and staff will be monitoring emails at info@clarendoncountylibrary.com to answer questions about using digital materials. The book drop is also closed. Patrons may keep their items until the library reopens. No fees will be charged.

The ninth-annual Boy Scouts BBQ event scheduled for March 27-28 has been postponed.

All productions of Columbia City Ballet’s Cinderella have been canceled along with all the company’s productions. The show was supposed to tour at Patriot Hall in Sumter on March 21. CCB asks patrons who already bought tickets to donate them to “mitigate the financial losses created by the cancellation of our performance season.”

Mt. Zion Enrichment Center, 315 W. Fulton St., has postponed its Healthy Blue SC farmers market set for March 25. A new date has not yet been set.

The Cinderella Shop at First Presbyterian Church, which provides free prom dresses to high school students in need, will not open as scheduled March 20-24.

Visitors wanted to see patients at McLeod Health facilities are limited to no more than one guest over the age of 18. Children under the age of 18 cannot visit.

The Friends of the NRA event scheduled for March 25 is postponed. A new event date may be communicated soon. All ticket sales will be honored.

Sumter Senior Services is canceling the Microbrew festival this year. There will not be a fundraising meeting this month.

The Vision In Progress meeting scheduled for April 1 at the Clyburn Transportation Center has been canceled.

McDonald’s is closing all seating and play areas in U.S. restaurants. The fast-food giant is encouraging customers to use drive-thru, take out and delivery options. A notice from the chain said stores likes Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Chipotle and Starbucks are also encouraging customers to get their orders to go.

Sub Station II’s Sumter locations will be for takeout only for the “foreseeable future.” Call (803) 775-5328 to place an order at 15 N. Harvin St. Orders will be picked up at the window. The annual Puddin’ Swamp Festival in Turbeville has been postponed.

Laurence Manning Academy classrooms will be open to students and families Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for students to collect their books, learning materials and any needed personal items. Students will need their books and learning materials to continue learning online, which will begin on Wednesday. School is estimated to reopen on April 1.

(Announcements and changes made Monday, March 16)

Walmart stores and Neighborhood Markets are now open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. until further notice. Stores operating at more reduced hours regularly will keep their current hours of operation.

Epps Orthodontics will be closed for two weeks starting on Tuesday, as recommended by the American Dental Association, according to an Epps Orthodontics employee. Staff will contact and reschedule appointments for clients during that time once they return to work. Another dentist's office in Sumter said the S.C. Board of Dentistry recommended all dental offices close for two weeks. The board advised offices to see patients only for urgent needs or emergencies.

Upon entering Prisma Health facilities, including at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, visitors will now be asked to follow three steps:

  • Only one visitor per patient.
  • Check in at the main entrance, other designated entrance or emergency department. Other doors may be locked. Signs will direct visitors.
  • Visitors will be asked questions to determine if they’ve had a fever, cough, sore throat, body aches or nasal congestion in the past 24 hours. Visitors’ temperatures will be taken. Visitors will be asked about travel outside the country or exposure to a person testing positive with COVID-19.
  • Visitors with symptoms will not be permitted inside.
  • Visitors must be 18 years or older to visit a patient in any hospital, except with approval by the patient’s physician

Visitors to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in the Midlands is limited to parents only. In the absence of one or both parents, one designated caregiver will be allowed to visit the patient. All visitors must be 18 years or older.

No more than one visitor per patient will be allowed at all McLeod Health facilities. Visitors must be 18 years or older. Children under the age of 18 cannot visit.

Chick-Fil-A is closing its dining rooms across the nation. The locations at 1170 Broad St. will continue offering drive-thru and mobile pick up services, and the location in the Sumter Mall is continuing to serve food, as well.

The appearance by Susan Zurenda, author of the novel "Eli's Bells," at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Sumter County Library on Sunday, March 22, has been postponed until Sunday, May 31.

All 2020 Morris College Alumni Weekend events scheduled for April 16-19 have been canceled.

Festival on the Avenue has been postponed until further notice.

The Sumter County Library and Sumter County Museum have canceled public events through March.

The county's Census 2020 bingo events are canceled.

Manning's Striped Bass Festival has been postponed.

The second-annual Inspire! Festival and all associated events are canceled. Art may still be displayed in windows downtown.

The James Gregory event scheduled for March 20 at the Sumter Opera House has been postponed. A rescheduled date will be announced soon. Previously purchases tickets will be honored for the new date.

The Annual Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic originally scheduled for March 27-29 at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia has been canceled.

Sumter Little Theatre's production of "The Hobbit," originally scheduled to open on March 26, has been postponed. It is now scheduled to open on April 26.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the City of Sumter’s Recreation Renovation and Gymnasium Penny for Progress Project has been canceled. It was scheduled for Tuesday, March 17.

Clemson University is extending its online instruction through Sunday, April 5. All university events statewide have been suspended through April 5.

All public schools in the state of South Carolina are closed beginning Monday, March 16, through at least the end of March per orders from the governor.

All CCTC campuses are closed to instruction and events March 16-31. Students: Coursework will resume online no later than March 23. (Announcements made prior to Sunday, March 15)

The City of Sumter asks that only those directly concerned with items on the agenda attend its regularly scheduled meetings on Tuesday, March 17. Council will not have a public comment period during the meeting.

Shaw Air Force Base elevated the Health Protection Condition (HPCON) to BRAVO Friday. Though there are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Shaw, the base is entering HPCON due to cautionary measures. According to 20th Fighter Wing public affairs, all base operations are continuing as normal, but all large on-base gatherings are canceled. Other updates include: new gate procedures, where you hold your CAC with the barcode out to the defenders when entering the base rather than handing them your card; the Airman Leadership School Graduation has been canceled; the Daddy/Daughter dance has been canceled; no bingo until further notice; and Club will only serve from the pub menu.

Walgreens is waiving delivery fees for all eligible prescriptions beginning Friday, March 13. The pharmacy chain is also offering free delivery on any purchase on www.Walgreens.com, with no minimum purchase required.

Mayesville Presbyterian Church's benefit for Feed My Starving Children, scheduled for March 19, has been canceled.

The annual Farm to Table event, scheduled for March 19, has been canceled. It brings dozens of vendors to the Sumter County Civic Center to support local agriculture, food industry professionals and the Sumter Rotary Club. If you purchased tickets already, you have until April 30 to return them for a full refund. Mail your tickets along with your name and address to Farm to Table, c/o Sumter Rotary Club, P.O. Box 1212, Sumter SC 29151-1212. After April 30, proceeds for any tickets not refunded will be divided among the charities slated to benefit from the event.

On Thursday, the Carolina Cup Racing Association canceled the upcoming 86th Carolina Cup on March 28. The cancellation was due to guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local Kershaw County health authorities amid the recent coronavirus outbreak in South Carolina. While the decision was not made lightly, the CCRA said it put the safety of its patrons, athletes, residents of South Carolina and staff first. “In the history of the Carolina Cup Races, this is only the second time the tradition has been interrupted,” the CCRA said in a press release. “We value the families and many sponsors who have supported this important tradition for decades.” According to CCRA leaders, the one other time the Carolina Cup was canceled was during World War II. With the cancellation, the CCRA and Camden will experience an “obvious economic impact,” but the exact estimate has not yet been determined. According to CCRA leaders, the 2020 races reportedly expected 30,000 patrons based on ticket sales, which was the highest number of ticket sales they’ve seen in years. Patrons will be emailed details on how to obtain a refund on their purchase. Patrons can also roll over their reservations for the running of the Carolina Cup Races in 2021.

The YWCA Excellence in High Heels on March 21 is postponed until a later date.

The Harvin Clarendon County Library is suspending bookmobile and outreach services beginning Monday. This suspension of services will be in effect through the end of March. Public storytimes and the Library Book Club meeting scheduled for March have been canceled. The library in Manning will continue to operate regular hours and will post any additional schedule changes or closures to its website and the library Facebook page.

The University of South Carolina, including all of its campuses and USC Sumter, is extending spring break for a week through March 20. Classes will then be conducted online through April 3.

Morris College is extending spring break an extra week and is planning to resume classes on March 23. Residence halls will be closed while school is closed.

Saint Leo University, which has an education center at Shaw Air Force Base and an education office on South Wise Drive, is moving online starting Monday, March 16.
