FROM STAFF REPORTS

Amid shutdowns and pandemic headlines, The Sumter Item welcomed a new team member.

Devin McDonald joined the advertising department as a sales representative to help Sumter, Clarendon and Lee County businesses promote their community value at such an important time as now.

"It's exciting just being here, being a fly on the wall outside of the newsroom and hearing about everything that is going on in Sumter and the world today," the Sumter native said.

Before joining The Sumter Item, he had been working in the health care industry for 10 years, doing sales and management for the last six.

He said he is excited to be working for The Sumter Item, where he can be involved in enhancing Sumter and being more involved in the community.

"Like most Sumter natives, The Item has been a part of my life for a long time," he said. "From reading the Sunday comics at my grandma's house to playing soccer in high school and seeing my picture and name show up in the paper to now keeping up with our current pandemic every day. The Item has always been an important part of the community."

He said he remembers when he played soccer as a child, he played for The Item's team.

"Ultimately, I want the Sumter economy to grow and thrive, so anything I can do to help local businesses stand out or bring in more customers," he said, "that's what I'm here to do."

McDonald graduated from Lakewood High School. He married his wife, Kyndal, in 2012, and they have two children, Ella Rose and Ben.

He and his family attend Christ Community Church.

"I know he's anxious to meet many members of the community face to face, but it looks like we'll be making mostly phone and virtual introductions for the time being," said Vince Johnson, Item publisher. "It's certainly an interesting time to start a new job, but more people are engaged with The Item today than at any point in our 125-year history, so we have a lot to offer those still trying to connect with the community. I'd encourage everyone to reach out and welcome him into his new role. We're extremely excited to have Devin join our team."
