Thomas Sumter family descendant to speak Monday at meeting

Thomas Sumter Tisdale will be the guest speaker at Monday's meeting of the Sumter County Genealogical Society. Tisdale is a Charleston attorney, an author and a playwright who has done extensive research on the family of Revolutionary War Gen. Thomas Sumter. In his presentation, Tisdale will discuss the Sumter family genealogy, partially focusing on its interracial connections.

A member of the Charleston County, South Carolina, Federal Bar and The American Bar Associations, he is also a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States and of the Bar of the Supreme Court of South Carolina. Tisdale is listed in Who's Who in the South and Southeast, Who's Who in American Law, The Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers in South Carolina and several other prestigious volumes.

In addition, Tisdale is a prolific author, with works including "A Lady of the High Hills: Natalie Delage Sumter," published by the University of South Carolina Press in 2001. His most recent play is "Truth in Cold Blood," a Play in Three Acts, which was performed at Charleston's Dock Street Theater in 2014.

Tisdale also serves on the boards of many commissions and charitable organizations.

Tisdale's presentation will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Swan Lake Presbyterian Church, 912 Haynsworth St. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The Sumter County Genealogical Society meets monthly from September through May. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend. Admission is free to the public, and refreshments will be served following the presentation.
