Thomas Sumter volleyball opens region play with win over Calhoun

ST. MATTHEWS - Thomas Sumter Academy's varsity volleyball team opened its region schedule with a 3-2 victory over Calhoun Academy on Thursday at the CA gymnasium.

The Lady Generals, who improved to 4-5 on the season, won by the scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 15-9.

Logan Scruggs had 18 assists and three aces, while Karleigh Young had 24 kills to lead TSA.

Hailey Trimnal had five aces, while Maci Willetts had three aces and eight kills. Marlyn Huiling had 10 assists and Lindsey Daniel had eight kills.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

Wilson Hall 37

Porter-Gaud 7

The Wilson Hall junior varsity football team opened its season with a 37-7 victory over Porter-Gaud on Thursday at Spencer Field.

Cameron Coulter passed for 95 yards and ran for 34 yards to lead the Barons. Defensively, Coulter had five tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Clark Kinney ran for 73 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 11 receiving yards. He also blocked a punt.

Dylan Richardson ran for 54 yards and a touchdown, had 31 yards receiving, kicked a 25-yard field goal and two extra points and caught a pass for a 2-point conversion.

Miles Van Patten ran for 47 yards and a touchdown to go with 20 yards receiving, and Grayson Alexander had five tackles.

B TEAM FOOTBALL

Sumter 7

Lexington 0

LEXINGTON - Sumter High School improved to 1-1 with a 7-0 victory over Lexington on Thursday at the LHS field.

Keon Jett had a 28-yard run for the game's lone score. Juda Keton kicked the extra point.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Alice Drive 3

Chestnut Oaks 0

Alice Drive defeated Chestnut Oaks 3-0 on Thursday at the ADMS gymnasium.

The Lady Hawks won by the scores of 25-6, 25-7, 26-24.

Dayleigh Jackson led Alice Drive with 11 aces, while Autumn Osteen had nine. Nicki Hazuda had six kills.

Hillcrest 3

Furman 0

Hillcrest improved to 3-0 with a 3-0 victory over Furman on Thursday at the FMS gymnasium.

The Lady Indians won by the scores of 25-12, 25-21, 25-12.

NaLayah Singleton had 22 service points and two aces for Hillcrest. Makayla Leonard had seven points and three aces, Jerniya Alston had five points and one ace, Cecelia Nassef had three digs,

Junnica Aparicio had four digs and three kills, Taylor Lacy had three kills and one block, and Jhamya Billups had four kills.

JUNIOR VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

Wilson Hall improved to 5-3 with a 2-1 victory over Ben Lippen on Thursday at Nash Student Center.

The Lady Barons won by the scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-14.

VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS

Lower Richland 5

Sumter 1

Sumter High School lost to Lower Richland 5-1 on Thursday at the SHS courts.

The Lady Gamecocks' No. 1 player, Whitney Crawford, picked up the lone victory.

1 - Whitney Crawford (S) defeated Stacey Garrick 6-3, 6-1.

2 - Georgia Jackson (LR) defeated Kadyn Dickerson 6-1, 6-2.

3 - D'laujai Kelly (LR) defeated Cameron Jackson 6-1, 6-3.

4 - Tyra Hoyd (LR) defeated Marilize Cornwell 6-0, 6-0.

5 - Zaria Moore (LR) defeated Peyton Gratz 6-4, 6-1.

DOUBLES

1 - Did not play.

2 - Elizabeth Brooker/Michelle Wallace (LR) defeated Mary Helen Hines/Abbey Bryant 6-1, 6-2.

VARSITY GIRLS GOLF

Sumter loses tri-match

COLUMBIA - Sumter High School lost a tri-match to Gilbert and Cardinal Newman on Thursday at The Members at Wood Creek golf course.

Gilbert won with a score of 168. Cardinal Newman shot a 186, and the Lady Gamecocks shot a 244.

Denae Brunson led SHS with a round of 53. Audrey Shuping shot a 56, Sydney Brownlee a 67 and Patience Williams a 68.
