Things will be heating up between fire stations from Sumter and surrounding counties at the ninth-annual Tom Garrity Firefighter BBQ Challenge on Saturday behind Nettles Auditorium at University of South Carolina Sumter, 200 Miller Road.
In honor of volunteer firefighter Tom Garrity, 11 fire stations will be competing for the Firefighter Pit Master title as they make barbecue by the pound.
Chairman of the Challenge committee Will Fort said this will be a great event for the community to attend and help support local firefighters and the American Red Cross.
Sumter's very own Shaw Air Force Base Fire Station, Graham Fire Station, Dalzell Fire Station and Sumter Fire Department Headquarters will be competing for the title, according to Sumter Fire Department Division Chief Joey Duggan.
The cook-off will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will get the chance to taste endless amounts of barbecue and vote on their favorite team. There will also be a door prize for a large custom gas grill.
Tickets are $10, and all proceeds will benefit the Red Cross Disaster Relief.
For more information, contact Will Fort at (803) 983-0648.
