Trustees may name new Sumter School District superintendent Tuesday during meeting

Sumter School District's Board of Trustees has a special-called meeting on Tuesday night, and that might be when it names the next superintendent.

A district staff member posted a meeting agenda online on Friday, and it includes the full board deliberating in executive session behind closed doors on the superintendent search and also contractual negotiations. Upon returning to open session, the board may take action resulting from executive session, per the agenda.

This past week during its regularly scheduled monthly meeting, the full board also deliberated in executive session on the search process, which includes four finalists for the top post.

Those finalists include one candidate who already works for Sumter School District, David Laws Jr., as well as MiUndrae Prince of Richland School District 1, Sam Whack Jr. of Jasper County School District and William Wright Jr. of Hertford County Schools in North Carolina.

Outgoing Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Miller will also provide a fiscal year 2023 budget update, according to the agenda. Lexington School District 1 announced on Friday that Miller will become its new CFO on July 1.

Tuesday's meeting will be at Sumter Career and Technology Center, 2612 McCrays Mill Road, which is in front of Sumter High School, and begin at 6 p.m.

Like all other meetings of local officials, the meeting is open to the public. Because it is a special-called meeting, public participation will not occur and is not listed on the agenda.

For those not physically attending Tuesday, the district continues to broadcast meetings live on YouTube.

Anyone wanting to attend the meeting virtually can do so via YouTube Sumter School District Board Meeting and the district's Facebook page, @SumterSCSchools.
