Tuomey's Breast Center reaccredited for ultrasound and biopsy services

Sumter's Prisma Health Breast Health Center has been recognized for its quality of care and facility.

The center, located at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in downtown Sumter, has been awarded two three-year terms of renewed accreditation: one in breast ultrasound and one in stereotactic breast biopsy. The review by the American College of Radiology for these modalities helps the center maintain its status as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, according to a news release from Prisma Health.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.

"Accreditation ensures the Breast Center is constantly working to achieve the highest quality of care and improve outcomes for all patients, rather than just meeting the normal standards," said Terry Jett, mammography manager for the center. "It is a team effort that we take very seriously. Our department is very proud to be a part of saving lives and will continue to strive to be the very best."

As a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, Prisma Health Breast Health Center-Sumter is fully accredited by the ACR for having achieved high standards in quality, staff and advanced technology. The program, which is administered by ACR, ensures patients will have access to:

- An interdisciplinary team approach to coordinate best treatment options;

- Breast cancer conferences;

- Information about ongoing clinical trials; and

- Quality breast care close to home.
