A man was killed Monday morning when his U-Haul truck hit a deer on Interstate 95.

Sumter County Coroner’s Office responded to the wreck at southbound mile marker 134 early Monday, where they found Joshua Oakley, 39, of Duck Pond Road in Florence. He was pronounced dead on scene, according to coroner Robbie Baker.

“The U-Haul truck had struck a deer then went off the roadway into the median, and then the vehicle caught fire,” said Lance Cpl. David Jones with South Carolina Highway Patrol.

He said there was a dead deer near the area of the crash.

The wreck occurred about 4:50 a.m. on Monday. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday morning at MUSC in Charleston.

Relatives of Oakley have been notified.

South Carolina Highway Patrol and Sumter County Coroner’s Office are continuing the investigation.
