USC Sumter baseball splits 4-game Region X series

LANCASTER - The University of South Carolina Sumter baseball team picked up a pair of 1-run victories over USC Lancaster on Sunday at the USCL field to sweep a doubleheader and earn a split in their 4-game Region X series.

The Fire Ants won by the scores of 9-8 and 6-5 in eight innings on Sunday to improve to 19-17 overall and 7-5 in region play. The Lancers won by the scores of 6-4 and 6-1 on Saturday.

Lancaster is 24-8 and 11-6.

Sumter plays host to Spartanburg Methodist College in a 4-game series beginning on Saturday. The teams will play doubleheaders on both days at Riley Par, starting at 1 p.m. both days.

USCS 9, USCL 8

In Sunday's opener, USCS rallied from a 5-1 deficit for the win. Sumter had 12 hits with Jonathan Jagielski, Shanif Hirani, Payton Young and Tyler Mangum picking up two apiece.

Jagielski and Young both had a double with Young scoring two runs and driving in two runs. Tyler Turner had a double and three RBI, while Kyle Kalick had a double. Hirani scored twice.

Tristen Campbell worked the final two innings to pick up his sixth save of the season. He struck out two and allowed one run to secure the win for Chandler Sox, who improved to 4-1 with just one-third of an inning of work.

USCS 6, USCL 5

In the nightcap, Campbell started on the mound for Sumter and worked all eight innings to get the win. Campbell, now 4-1, struck out nine and walked just two while allowing five hits. Only three of the runs were earned.

The Fire Ants had 12 hits with Mangum, Turner, Lee Metts and Payton Young getting two apiece. Turner and Mangum both hit home runs. Turner had two RBI and a run, while Mangum had a run and an RBI.

Young had an RBI, while Hirani had a double and two runs, and Kalick had a hit and two RBI.

USCL 6, USCS 4

In Saturday's opener, USC Sumter managed just seven hits. Kaleb Strader and Hirani had two apiece. Strader hit a homer and three RBI.

Alex Sanchez took the loss, falling to 2-2. He was charged with all of the runs.

USCL 6, USCS 1

The Lancers' Seth Chestnut scattered nine hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out 10 Fire Ants.

Turner had three of the hits, picking up one RBI. Vince Hanna had two hits, scoring the only run.

Austin Pearce took the loss to fall to 3-2.
