FROM STAFF REPORTS
Sumter gospel band Elijah Bradford and the Valentinos has won the competition to become the group to open the S.C. State Fair concert by famed gospel singer JJ Hairston.
Hairston is the leader, chief songwriter and director of the Youthful Praise choir, nationally known for its urban-influenced style of gospel and its praise and worship songs.
To win the honor, Bradford and the Valentinos had to garner the most votes from the public. They will play Sunday, Oct. 20, at the state fair in Columbia.
Among the songs Bradford and the Valentinos plan to perform are original music and covers of such popular gospel groups as The Winans, Rance Allen and The Mighty Clouds of Joy.
