A Sumter woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle Saturday evening as she walked along U.S. 15 North.

Sandy Johns, 35, succumbed to her injuries at Prisma Health Richland on Sunday, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said Johns was walking south near Pendar Lane about 6:50 p.m. on Feb. 2 when a 2007 Ford SUV struck her. She was transported to the hospital by ambulance, where she later died.

A driver and two passengers in the vehicle were all wearing a seat belt, and they did not report any injuries, Southern said.

Johns' next of kin has been notified, and an autopsy is scheduled for today at MUSC in Charleston.

The incident remains under investigation by the highway patrol. No information about possible charges were available.
