29-year-old Sumter driver involved in collision that killed Virginia man, according to Sumter Police Department
The investigation into the collision is ongoing
A 76-year-old man was killed Friday night when he was struck by an SUV while walking on Calhoun Street near Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital about 6:30 p.m, according to city and county authorities.
Raymond McLeod, of Williamsburg, Virginia, was struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban while walking on the marked crosswalk, Tonyia McGirt, Sumter Police Department public information officer, said.
The 29-year-old driver, a Sumter resident, stopped after the collision, she said.
Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said McLeod was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey where he later died of his injuries.
McLeod’s next of kin have been notified, he said, and an autopsy will be performed at a later date at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
The possibility of charges for the driver was not mentioned but McGirt said the investigation is continuing.
