W. Hildreth Carter Brown, age 92, beloved wife of 72 years to the late Horace Ross Brown, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, at her residence.

Born in the community of Arguta, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lenorad Carter and Dorcas C. Carter. Hildreth grew up with love for the Lord and attended Union Presbyterian Church in her youth. In 1947, she married Horace R. Brown and left her little community of Arguta to go across the world to start her life of many travels in Tachikawa, Japan. She settled in Sumter for 30 years and was a Sunday school teacher and youth director for many years. She then moved back to the Arguta community for 20 years and attended her childhood church again of Union Presbyterian Church, before she moved back to Sumter to live out her life.

Hildreth is survived by three sons, Larry Ross Brown and his wife, Helen, of Fort Rucker, Alabama, Robert Bryan Brown of Sumter and Mark Wynn Brown of Arguta; one daughter, Brenda Dale James and her husband, Tracy, of Theodore, Alabama; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband of 72 years, Horace R. Brown, and her parents, Robert and Dorcas Carter, she was preceded in death by two brothers and their wives, L. Cullen and Martha Carter and J. Neal and Velma Carter; an uncle and aunt who were very special to her in her life, Daniel and Catherine Cox; and one grandson, David B.R. Brown.

A private interment will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

Due to COVID-19, a private family visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.
