Walter Lee Chestnut, better known as Butch, was the loving husband of Vivian T. Chestnut, father of his beautiful daughter, Veronica M. Chestnut, and son of the late Joseph Sr. and Mable McLeod Chestnut. He was born on April 9, 1950, in Oswego and departed this earthly life to be with the Lord on Monday, May 17, 2021, at his home in Wedgefield.

Walter was educated in Sumter County public schools and was a graduate of Eastern High School Class of 1970. After graduating high school, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served honorably for three years. Walter enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, fishing and cooking. He was always handy dandy Butch. Walter confessed his life to Christ and became a member of Clark United Methodist Church, where he served in many positions until his health failed.

Walter leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Vivian T. Chestnut of 39 years; his daughter, Veronica M. Chestnut (Rodney); his first grandchild expected soon, Taylor Noble Chestnut-Sherman; six sisters, Mildred C. Wells (Elias), Helen C. Richardson, Mary Ruth Chestnut, Thomasena C. Wheeler (David), Rebecca Hunt and Daphne Chestnut; two brothers, Joseph Chestnut Jr. and Alphonso Chestnut; his aunts, Martha Davis McBride, Dorothy McLeod Myers, Lillian Williams (Isaac), Lillian White, Elease James and Bessie T. James; his uncles, Harry McLeod, Abraham McLeod, LeRoy McLeod (Hattie Mae), Samuel White (Hazelree), Jacob McLeod and Herbert James; a very special cousin, Hattie Mae Brown; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home from 4 until 7 p.m., 5765 Opal Lane, Wedgefield.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Raymond F. Cook Jr., pastor of Clarks United Methodist Church, officiating.

The procession will leave at 1:20 p.m. from the home.

Burial will be at Clarks United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery, Oswego Highway, Sumter.
