WASH ANDERSON

Posted

God in His infinite wisdom called Wash Anderson, 74, to his home of eternal rest on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, at his residence in Decatur, Georgia.

He was born on May 2, 1944, the 10th of 12 children to Joseph Sr. and Sallie Lou Abraham Anderson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph Anderson Jr., George Anderson Sr., Eli Anderson and Samuel Anderson; and three sisters, Anna Mae Douglas, Sallie Samuels and Ella Mae Anderson.

Wash was educated in the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, his Christian experience began at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, where he worshipped and was a member for many years, until his relocation to New York City. While in New York and Georgia, he continued his Christian experience and was affiliated with numerous churches, always seeking to put God first and reinforcing the Christian values instilled in him at an early age by his parents. He often attended Mountainside Seventh-Day Adventist Church with his wife. Wash was employed by the City of New York in the Department of Parks and Recreation for many years, until his retirement in 2010. He exemplified strong work ethics and received notable recognition for his impeccable service. Prior to his retirement, he was recognized by former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, for the pride and great detail he took in his work and the Devoe Park in Bronx, New York, was re-named in his honor. Upon retirement in 2010, he relocated to Decatur, where he resided and lived out his golden years to the fullest, until his untimely demise.

Wash leaves to cherish and honor his memory: a devoted and loving wife of 22 years, Veda Nichols Anderson of Decatur; three daughters, Rosa Mae Lawson of Sumter, Christina (Joseph) Toney of Elliott and Rosalee (Kevin) Carter of Baltimore; three sons, Melvin James of Philadelphia, Michael Hudson of Bronx and Devon (Shernette) Simpson of Decatur; four sisters, Carrie Anderson of Bronx, Sarah J. Dean of Sumter, Rena A. Burrell of New York City, New York, and Willie Mae Anderson of Mayesville; six sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, other sorrowing relatives and friends.

The family will receive relatives and friends at his sister's home, 209 E. Moore St., Sumter.
