Wedgefield man killed by unknown suspect in Sumter

Officers are investigating after a 31-year-old man was shot and killed in his vehicle early Friday morning by an unknown suspect.

Sherrod Carlton Smith, of Wedgefield, was sitting inside a vehicle parked in the backyard of a residence in the 1000 block of South Main Street at about 3 a.m. when an unknown person walked up to the vehicle and shot him, said Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department.

Inside the vehicle with Smith was a 37-year-old woman who escaped the incident without harm, McGirt said.

The identity of the shooter is not known, and a description is not yet available.
