West Liberty Street closed downtown as building for future Sumter brewery torn down

Construction crews are working to tear down the old Standard Music building at the corner of West Liberty and South Main streets in downtown Sumter Wednesday morning to make way for the county’s first brewery.

Sumter Original Brewery, owned by Thompson Shuler LLC, is expected to open by the end of the year, barring construction and weather delays, and will have a tasting room and roof-top sitting area.

The brewery, according to recently amended zoning and development standards for downtown’s Central Business District, will produce not more than 10,000 barrels of beer annually.

Standard Music has moved from 2 S. Main St. to 561 Bultman Drive after nearly 45 years of being downtown.

West Liberty Street from Main Street to Sumter Street is closed to traffic while crews are working.
