Column by Sumter Pastor Joey Durham: You can rest fully in peace in Jesus

Posted

Our devotion for today asks this question, "Are You at Peace?" My text is found in Psalm 102:24-28, where we read, "I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations. Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee." (KJV)

Are you experiencing peace today in your heart and life? Maybe you're troubled about the condition of our nation, or perhaps there are some personal issues in your life that are causing you to be anxious in your soul. It may even be that sins of your past, which although you've asked for and received forgiveness from God, are still causing heartache because the adversary keeps reminding you of them.

No matter what it may be that is agitating your thoughts and causing turmoil in your heart and life, I want you to know that God has not abandoned you, nor has He left you to wallow in misery. Here in our text, the Psalmist David is writing about his affliction, being overwhelmed by the troubles in his life, and speaking about the earth and the heavens, declared, "They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end." The apostle John learns the same truth in Revelation chapter 1:8, as he hears Jesus Christ Himself declare, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty." (KJV)

Jesus Christ wanted David, John and you and I, as well, to experience the peace in knowing that He is sovereign, which simply means that He is in complete control and nothing is beyond His control. He is "the Almighty!" Why, then, should I fear or be anxious? Because I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as my own Savior and Shepherd, I can rest fully in Him and be at peace enjoying the truth of 1 Peter 5:7: "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." (KJV)
