AP Source: Celtics trade Rondo to Mavs

Posted

BOSTON - A person with knowledge of the deal says the Boston Celtics have agreed to trade four-time allstar point guard Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks.

The Celtics will get Jae Crowder, Brandan Wright, Jameer Nelson and two draft picks, said the person who spoke on the condition of anonymity Thursday night because the trade was not official yet.

The deal gives Dallas a pass-first point guard and gives Dirk Nowitzki a chance at another title. The Mavericks also get forward Dwight Powell in the deal while giving up a firstround pick in 2015 and a secondrounder the next season.

Rondo, 28, joined the rebuilding Celtics as the 21st overall pick out of Kentucky and became the point guard for an NBA champion when Boston acquired Ray Allen and
Kevin Garnett the next summer. He helped the Celtics reach the NBA finals again two years later. But with the Celtics in the middle of rebuilding, he proved more valuable on the trade market.

BEARS BENCH STARTER CUTLER FOR CLAUSEN
LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Chicago Bears benched Jay Cutler on Thursday, deciding to start Jimmy Clausen against this Detroit Lions this weekend in favor of their franchise quarterback who signed a massive, sevenyear deal less than a year ago.

Head coach Marc Trestman said Cutler will be available as the backup for Sunday's game at Soldier Field, where boos have rained down on a punchless, porous team that is now 5-9 and playing out the string after starting the season with legitimate hopes of a deep playoff run.

They will miss the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons. The move fuels the idea that the Bears are in a state of dysfunction and that the future of everyone from general manager Phil Emery on down is open to discussion. There has been plenty of speculation about Trestman, now in his second year, not to mention defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer.

ST. PETE COUNCIL REJECTS DEAL WITH RAYS
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The St. Petersburg City Council has rejected a deal reached earlier this month between the Rays and the city's mayor that would have allowed the team to search for new stadium sites on both sides of Tampa Bay.

The council voted 5-3 Thursday to reject Mayor Rick Kriseman's proposed agreement. The team has played since its inception in Pinellas County at what now is called Tropicana Field. The agreement would have allowed the Rays to evaluate sites on the east side of the bay in Hillsborough County, where Tampa is located.

The deal also would have established how much the Rays would have had to pay the city if they left their current home before their Tropicana Field lease expires in 2027.

The Rays have been able to consider only alternative sites in St. Petersburg and surrounding Pinellas County.
