ALBERTA L. DAVIS

Funeral services for Alberta L. Davis will be held at noon on Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 803 S. Harvin St., Sumter, with Senior Pastor Marion H. Newton as eulogist and Pastor Ricky S. Simmons presiding. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park cemetery, Sumter.

The public may view today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter.

Mrs. Davis will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. on Saturday for further viewing until the hour of service.

Mrs. Davis transitioned on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018.

Born in Dillon County, she was a daughter of the late James Moses Lewis and Mary Jane Owens Lewis. She was the widow of Freddie Lee Davis. She received her early education in the public schools of Dillon and Marion counties. She was a graduate of Morris College, Sumter, Class of 1949 and did further studies at South Carolina State University and North Carolina Central in Durham. Mrs. Davis' spiritual journey began at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Fork and later at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Marion. After marriage, she joined her husband at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as former president of the senior missionary ministry, church secretary and Bible school teacher.

"Mother Davis" had a servant's heart and always enjoyed helping and assisting others. She taught in the public schools for 30 years and retired from Darlington County School District 6. In the community, she was a member of the local State Education Association, Retired Teachers Association, the United Order of Tent Elizabeth 57, Morris College Alumni Chapter of Sumter and a member of the NAACP.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Frederick Rodney Davis and Freddie Alvin Davis Jr.; an adopted daughter-in-law, Linda T. Boykin; and siblings, Frierson Lewis, Mary E. Barnette, Hattie Gwaltney, Addie Lewis, Gusella Moody, Frances Fleming, Anna Brown, Margaret Roberson and Flossie L. Cooley.

Survivors include one daughter, Gloria (Carl) Baker of Sumter; daughter-in-law, Geneva Davis of Columbia; an adopted son-in-law, Marvin Boykin of Sumter; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
