A private funeral service will be held in honor of Demetre Terrell Gayle.

There will be a public viewing from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter.

Demetre Terrell Gayle was born at Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter. At the age of 38, he crossed over to life on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"Meechie," as he was affectionately known, began his life's journey in Sumter county public schools and was a graduate of Sumter High School Class of 2003. Demetre was very creative, talented and excelled in academics. He attended Benedict College and University of South Carolina, both in Columbia, and later received his customs broker license. He formerly resided in Georgia, Tennessee and Columbia, until finally settling in Charlotte. He was employed by the Shapiro Co. in Charlotte as a customs broker. Demetre had a very outgoing and outspoken personality, and his presence brought great joy to those that knew and loved him. He will be missed dearly by his family and all those whose lives he touched.

He was preceded in eternal life by his grandfather, William Gayle Jr., and grandmother, Annie Lee Brown Gayle.

Survivors are his mother, Juanita G. Epps of Sumter; his sister, Daijah T. Epps; nieces, Keilani D. Epps and Kiyah J. Epps, all of Simpsonville; aunts, uncles, first and second cousins, whom he loved dearly, and many others.
