Flood advisory issued in Sumter, Lee, Clarendon counties

A flood advisory remains under effect in much of Sumter County and portions of Lee and Clarendon counties through 10 p.m. Tuesday as heavy rains, thunder and lightning pass through the area.

Strong thunderstorms will impact the county, including gusty winds up to 50 miles per hour that could cause minor damage to tree limbs and the blowing around of light, unsecured objects, according to a special weather statement from the National Weather Service.

The flood advisory from the agency warns of urban and small stream flooding for poor drainage areas in southeastern Lee County, northeastern Clarendon County and throughout most of Sumter County.

By 7 p.m., 1-2 inches of rain had already fallen from the storm, according to the agency.

There was visible standing water on some main roadways, including Broad Street and Alice Drive.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Sumter, South Sumter, Mulberry, Oakland, Millwood, Turbeville, Mayesville, Lynchburg, Cane Savannah, Oswego, Dalzell, Lakewood, Wedgewood, East Sumter, Cherryvale, Shiloh, Stateburg and Privateer.

“Additional rainfall of 1-2 inches is expected over the area,” the flood advisory states. “This additional rain will result in minor flooding … Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, country roads, farmland and other low-lying spots.”

Storms are only expected to last tonight and should clear up before the morning.
