Funeral services for Gloria Elizabeth Roman Felder will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Saint Paul AME Church, 835 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Frederick Graves, pastor, officiating. Entombment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The public may view from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, Sumter.

Gloria Elizabeth Felder, 83, transitioned on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, at Sumter East Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Gloria was born in Sumter County, a daughter of the late George Sr. and Malvenia Reed Roman. Gloria's education began in the public schools in Sumter County and she graduated in 1959 from Eastern High School. She later studied at Denmark Technical College, Central Carolina Technical College, Morris College and Sumter Cosmetology School. Gloria married the late Lucius Felder Jr. To this union, two children were born, Altoya and Georgette. At an early age, Gloria joined St. Paul AME Church and served in many capacities, to include the senior choir, Martin Luther King Committee and the Women's Missionary Society. She was employed at Eastern High School, Morris College and Sumter School District Two in the Special Services Department. Gloria enjoyed working and assisting families until her retirement in 1994.

Gloria was a member of the Sumter branch and life member of the National Association for the NAACP, where she worked with the Annual Freedom Fund Banquet, Get Out to Vote, and the voting polls in Sumter County. She was the president of the Sumter Foster Parents Association. She was a kind, loving and caring mother for her children, grandchildren, foster children and her community.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Georgette Felder-Spain; son-in-love, William "Bill" Spain; two brothers; and nine sisters.

Survivors are her devoted daughter, Altoya Felder-Deas and son-in-love, Jimmie Deas, of Sumter; four grandchildren, Jimal Deas of Marietta, Georgia, Christopher Spain of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Antoine Deas of Alexandria, Virginia, and Alexyus Spain of Charlotte, North Carolina; a brother, Johnnie (Miriam) Roman Sr. of Sumter; a sister, Dr. Barbara Roman Wilson Jackson of Sumter; sisters-in-love, Jean Felder of Sumter and Louise Shackelford of Charlotte; and a host of other dear relatives.
