Letter to the editor: Children aren't learning most basic math skills today

Posted

Just a thought.

With math scores so incredibly low in Sumter School District, how about kids K-8th grade are not allowed to use calculators or phones for basic math?

Our kids are not learning even the most basic of math skills. They need to "learn" how to think through math. That obviously is not happening now.

What is the district's policy of phones in schools?

I tutor young people for the ASVAB exam ... no calculators allowed. And kids are completely unprepared because they have never been taught.
