Letter to the editor: Leventis family is proud to call Sumter home

This is a special day for our entire family.

It was 50 years ago on Feb. 1 that our young family, my wife of four years, our son Gregory, then 2, with our second child on the way, returned to South Carolina. I had been out of my home state for 10 years, spending five years at the University of Virginia, where my wife and I met, and five years as an Air Force pilot in Texas while EV was an Army nurse in Oklahoma. I left the active duty in the Air Force to move to Sumer so that I could work in our family business and become a fighter pilot with the South Carolina Air National Guard.

Today, EV and I now have four children, four wonderful in-laws and seven beautiful grandchildren.

All four of our children who are proud graduates of Sumter High School are working hard along with their spouses to support their families.

Sumter welcomed us in 1974 and has been a great place to live, work and grow as a family. We are very grateful we were blessed to live in a community that is growing together with the Shaw, industrial, commercial and agricultural families.

We just want to say thank you to our friends and neighbors in Sumter. No matter where we go, Sumter is a place we are proud to call home.

E.V. and PHIL LEVENTIS
