SAMMIE LEE WASHINGTON SR.

Posted

Brother Sammie Lee "Boot" Washington Sr. was born on Dec. 25, 1943, in Sumter County, a son of the late Buster Wilson and Ann Bell Washington. He was reared by his grandmother, the late Sylvia "Lumpie" Washington. He departed this life on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, at Palmetto Health Tuomey, after a brief illness.

Brother Washington was united in holy matrimony to the late Sister Martha Mae Washington. He is the father of six children. Brother Washington attended the public schools of Sumter County. He was a devoted lifetime member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where he was baptized. He faithfully served his church in many capacities, including a leader of the gospel choir, senior choir, past chairman of the United Methodist Men and a member of the trustee board. He served with joy and enthusiasm. Brother Washington was a longtime trustee of the Mayesville Community Cemetery Association. Brother Washington was a man of dignity, who was always willing to lend a helping hand. We will miss his smile and presence.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: six sons, Sammie (Edna) Washington Jr. of Mayesville, Alfred (Minister Jeanie) Washington of Radcliff, Kentucky, Marcus (Tina) Washington of Columbia, Randy (Barbara) Washington, Bryon Rhames and Elijah Toney, all of Sumter; two sisters, Sylvia (Jeffrey) Scrivens of Baltimore and Annie Mae Benjamin of Sumter; four sisters-in-law, Paulette (David) Lemon, Victoria Jacobs, Sandra Rhames and Mary Ann Rhames, all of Sumter; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Rhames III of Sumter and Floyd (Charlene) Rhames of Columbus, Georgia; one brother in Christ, Bobby Muldrow; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
