Sumter County coroner identifies man found in stream as 31-year-old who was reported missing

*UPDATE 2:35 p.m.: The deceased individual found in a waterway near Dicks and Rast streets Wednesday morning has been identified as Chester "Rock" Stavis who was reported missing two days earlier.

Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker confirmed that Stavis was the man who was found in the stream at about 9:30 a.m. Next of kin have been notified.

Family members and acquaintances had not heard from nor seen Stavis since he left his home on Albert Spears Drive about noon Thursday, according to a release from Sumter Police Department.

Those close to the 31-year-old told officers it was out of character for Stavis to miss work and said no one to their knowledge had heard from him.

A cause of death is pending an autopsy scheduled at MUSC in Charleston Monday, according the coroner's office and police department.

The body of a man was found in a waterway connecting to Shot Pouch near Dicks and Rast streets Wednesday morning, according to Sumter Police Department.

Officers are working to notify the family of the deceased before his name will be released, said Tonyia McGirt, the department’s public information officer.
