Sumter's Next Generation, presented by CCTC: Sumter High president encourages peers to 'get active' in extracurriculars for 2024
The second half of the 2023-24 school year has started, ushering in fresh classes, new opportunities and a renewed outlook - and Sumter High School Student Body President Gabrielle Miller urges her fellow Gamecocks to seize the moment before the final school bell rings this June.
In her role as president of Sumter High student body and Key Club, basketball manager for the Lady Gamecocks and as a member of various school organizations, time management wasn't innate for this self-described "busy girl." From a young age, she was involved in gymnastics, modeling, and academic extracurriculars that required her to meet deadlines consistently, turning her into a pro at balancing a packed schedule.
Now a high school senior taking on diverse leadership roles, Gabrielle values being a voice for her peers. The responsibilities and time commitments, though overwhelming, have molded her perception and appreciation for high school. However, not all her peers share the same sentiment.
"I feel like a lot of my peers don't care to be in the building because they're not active in the building," Gabrielle expressed. "Once you find your peace, your niche in the building, they're going to want to be here, you're gonna want to be successful in whatever you do. Be involved in your school."
Gabrielle emphasized the two-way nature of extracurricular participation between teachers and students. Crediting the "meaningful relationships" built with her teachers and Principal Anamaria Sandor, she attributes her success as a school leader and navigating through high school challenges, including college applications, to these connections.
Looking ahead, Gabrielle plans to major in health care administration in college, aspiring to transfer her devote involvement in high school to a college campus.
"[Being a Gamecock] made me who I am; it's a different feeling. I'll take pride in being a Sumter High Gamecock forever."
As the Sumter High Class of 2024 embarks on the second half of the school year, Gabrielle wants more for her peers and her advice to achieve it is simple: keep going.
"We're seniors, and it's kind of unbelievable sometimes. I'm like, 'What? I'm supposed to be in eighth grade,' she joked. "But just keep going, just keep fighting."
