Woman, 37, dies in wreck near Shaw

A 37-year-old woman from Elgin died Thursday as a result of a two-vehicle wreck that occurred on U.S. 378 west in front of Shaw Air Force Base just after 2 p.m.

Ashley Gurly succumbed to injuries she sustained as a driver in the crash about 3:40 p.m. after being transported to Palmetto Health Tuomey, according to Sumter County Chief Deputy Coroner Bryan Rogers in a news release.

Her specific injuries, the circumstances of the collision and information on others involved were not immediately available.

Rogers said in the release that Gurly's family has been notified and that an autopsy will be conducted today in Newberry, which is about 40 miles northwest of Columbia. Elgin is almost 25 miles northeast of Columbia.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.
