4 vehicles involved in fatal wreck in Sumter

A Sumter man died after a four-vehicle wreck on U.S. 378 near U.S. 76 Thursday evening.
Vernon Myers, 58, of Collins Street, was pronounced dead on scene, said Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker. He was ejected from his vehicle during the collision.
At about 9:15 p.m., Myers was driving a 2000 Chevy Silverado eastbound when he lost control, crossed the raised median into the westbound lanes and side-swiped a 2016 F-150, said South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell. Myers’ vehicle was then t-boned by a F-550 that was traveling westbound.
A fourth vehicle, a 2014 Dodge caravan, was traveling eastbound when the tire of Myers' Silverado came off and struck it, Tidwell said.
The occupant of the Dodge caravan and the F-150 were not injured, but the driver of the F-550 was transported to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital for injuries.
The next of kin has been notified, and an autopsy will be performed Tuesday morning at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
