Body found roadside with multiple gunshot wounds, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office investigating

A body was found roadside along S.C. 261 early Saturday morning.

At about 7 a.m. on April 29, deputies responded to a body found along S.C. 261 near Yorkridge. The victim was identified as 28-year-old Diequan Underwood who died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the sheriff’s office.

Next of kin has been notified by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis commented on the county’s first homicide of 2023.

“Mr. Underwood was murdered late last night, and he was left along the roadway by someone who disregarded the value of his life. We are doing everything possible to verify those involved and ensure they are held accountable.”

An investigation is ongoing and little information is available.
