Bond deferred for Sumter man accused in bar shooting

Charges have been announced for a 29-year-old Sumter man in connection to a shooting at a bar earlier this month.

Warrants accuse Jerel Marquis Heriot, of Green Swamp Road, of firing a handgun at five people at a bar in the 1300 block of Peach Orchard Road on Feb. 2, where one man sustained a minor injury and multiple vehicles were damaged, according to Deputy Adrienne Sarvis, public information officer for the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Because of the “severity of the charges against him,” bond has been deferred for Heriot until he is given a date for general sessions court, a news release from the sheriff’s office said.  He was arrested on Feb. 11.

He has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, four counts of malicious injury to property with a value of $2,000 or less and one count each of possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a firearm on premises where alcohol is sold.

Sarvis said more charges are pending.
