Class 6 of The Ross McKenzie Emerging Leaders Program spent Saturday morning building a ramp for a senior couple in Sumter. The initiative, led by Sumter United Ministries, allows the students to gain hands-on experience serving their community - building camaraderie and breaking down barriers that separate them as they extend from different schools and counties. Throughout the year, the high school juniors from Sumter and Lee counties gain valuable experience through monthly modules where they learn from professors at USC Sumter and career experts. At the completion of the program, students earn three credit hours through USC and serve on a nonprofit board or committee during their senior year. The 20 students in Class 6 represent Crestwood High, Lakewood High, Lee Central High, Sumter High and Thomas Sumter Academy.
