A man is in custody after a domestic-related shooting that left one dead.
Before 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, officers responded to a residence on Mitchell Street in reference to a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers found 42-year-old Jarmel Benjamin Ellis, of the residence, inside with a gunshot wound, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for Sumter Police Department. He was treated on scene before being taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Next of kin has been notified by Sumter County Coroner’s Office and an autopsy is scheduled for later this week.
Devon Brown, 33, also of the home, was inside the house with the victim when authorities arrived. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, McGirt said.
He was taken to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
An investigation is ongoing.
