Funeral services for Lawrence Smith Jr. will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark United Methodist Church, 129 N. Main St., Mayesville, with the Rev. Franklin Garrett officiating. Interment will follow at Mayesville Community Cemetery.

The public may view from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

Mr. Smith transitioned on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

He was born in Lynchburg, to the late Lawrence Smith Sr. and Adelle Solomon Smith. He attended Lee County Public Schools and retired from Santee Print Works Co. of Sumter. Mr. Smith was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Mayesville and served in many capacities: church trustee, finance chairperson and lay leader. He also served as secretary and trustee for the Mayesville Community Cemetery. He was formerly married to the late Ruth Wilson Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 11 siblings.

Survivors include his son, Kenneth Jeroide Smith; daughter, Selena Ruth Smith of Mayesville; two brothers, Robert Smith of Landover, Maryland, and Joe (Janice) Smith of Monroe, North Carolina; three sisters, Naomi Toney of Mayesville, Bessie Commander of Sumter and Jessie Mae (William) Nedd of Washington, D.C.; in-laws. Harry Wilson of Philadelphia and Deborah Johnson of Washington, D.C.; two special nieces, Hattie Wilson of Mayesville and Joyce Commander of Sumter; and a host of other relatives.
