A Sumter man’s body was found off McCray’s Mill Road at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, marking what law enforcement says was a homicide, the first in Sumter in 2020.

A Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputy discovered the body of Montrel Epps, 23, during a property check after seeing Epps’s vehicle parked in the area, according to Adrienne Sarvis, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

Next of kin have been notified, and an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, according to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker.

This investigation is ongoing.

There were 14 homicides in Sumter County in 2019, double the number from 2018.
