Located at the former Blockbuster Video in front of Walmart on Broad Street, the 6,000-square-foot store design is centered on Mattress Firm's "Comfort by Color" concept, Earl said.
"It puts the mattresses together in the store based on comfort level," he said.
Customers can easily move throughout the store to browse and compare different styles and brands based on that comfort level - yellow for firm, orange for plush, red for pillow top, green for contoured and blue for TempurPedic.
"Unique to Mattress Firm is we carry all top-of-the-line TempurPedics, due to our relationship with the company," Earl said.
Earl said the store took about two days to set up and that if something isn't in stock, he or sales professional Yone Davis can have it delivered. A native of England, Earl was transferred to the store from the company's Lexington location; Davis came from Florence.
"The people have been really great," Earl said. "We did have someone come (Thursday) when we were setting up and ask if she could return a video."
The building has sat empty since Blockbuster closed its last location in Sumter nearly a year ago. The company had closed its other Sumter store on Guignard Drive in 2011, a year after it sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
"I think it's great name recognition," Earl said. "When you say we're in the old Blockbuster, people know where that is."
Founded on July 4, 1986, Mattress Firm Inc. is headquartered in Houston and operates more than 1,100 locations across 28 states nationwide. It is the largest U.S. bedding retailer, according to Business Wire.
CEO Steve Stagner said the company's goal is to make "the experience of shopping for a new mattress as simple and rewarding a process as possible."
"We are thrilled to be opening a new location in Sumter and look forward to offering our customers the same great shopping experience they have come to expect at our other locations throughout South Carolina," Stagner said.
The store, located at 1285 Broad St., is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (803) 469-0090.
