An official kick-off meeting for the Sumter 2040 Comprehensive Plan Update will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Central Carolina Technical College's Health Sciences Center, 133 S. Main St., in the Iris Room.
Municipalities are required by law to have a 20-year land use vision and actionable plan, and they are required to review and update it every so often. Currently, the plan looks through 2030.
The 2040 plan will determine what Sumter County and all of its different areas should look like and include in the future, from where commercial, residential and industrial districts should be to what environmental and quality-of-life amenities should be prioritized.
Part of the process in updating the plan is to incorporate public feedback and opinion.
"The outcomes of this public planning process will direct and guide future growth, development and change in both the city and county," the city says on its website.
This is the second major step in the process.
A community survey was open from September to October that asked 14 questions about what residents like, dislike, value and would like to see about and in Sumter. Overall, 1,207 multiple-choice responses were submitted, and 2,947 open-ended comments were given that included both compliments and criticisms of the Sumter community.
Thursday's meeting will include a review of the survey results, which came out at the beginning of November, and the beginning of a discussion on priority issues. Those community-wide discussions will later include focus groups and follow-up surveys.
