Roy David McMickell, 81, husband of Margie Louise McMickell, died on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

Born on March 6, 1938, in Ness City, Kansas, he was a son of the late Lester Forest McMickell and Mary Seals McMickell. He retired as a chief master sergeant from the S.C. Air National Guard after 31 years of service and was a veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He received the Guards-Man of the Year Award in 1984. He was a member of American Legion Post 175, where he served as chaplain. He retired from GTE after 33 years of service. He was a very active member of Springbank Baptist Church for more than 40 years and served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and chairman of the missions committee. He had a heart for missions and others knowing about Jesus.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years; three sons, Roy David McMickell Jr. (Sharlene), Lester Keith "KeKe" McMickell and Timothy Scott McMickell; daughter-in-law, Donna McMickell; six grandchildren, Jason Williams, Ashleigh Schexnayder (David), Brittany Wilkes (Douglas), Allison McMickell, Jeffrey McMickell (Laura) and Hannah McMickell; four great-grandchildren, Christian Schexnayder, Reagan Wilkes, Elizabeth Schexnayder and Katherine Schexnayder, and twins are expected in November; and siblings, Lettie Evans, Velma Murphy, Darlene Clark, Lester McMickell and Bobbie Jo McMickell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Buckner and Juanita McMickell.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Springbank Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
