SIDNEY CHARLES SMITH

DALZELL — Sidney Charles Smith, age 90, beloved husband of 45 years to the late Eileen Margaret Mulqueen Smith, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

Born in Florence County, he was the son of the late James E. Smith and Celia Reynolds Smith. Sidney served his country proudly, as a member of the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1972 as a technical sergeant after over 20 years. After his retirement from the military, he worked as a meat cutter at the commissary on Shaw Air Force Base for an additional 20 years. Sidney was an avid fisherman and bird hunter. He was very involved with quail conservation and served tirelessly in many forms helping educate and promote the population of quail in South Carolina. As a strong man of faith, Sidney and his late wife, Eileen, were active members of Wedgefield Baptist Church since 1984. During this time, Sidney served as a deacon, a Maggard Mission Ministry leader, as well as on the hospitality team. He was a man of strong conviction and was devoted to his faith and his family. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Sidney is survived by three sons, Charles Rodney Smith of Georgia, Denny Smith and Tony Smith and his wife, Debbie, both of West Virginia; one daughter, Lisa Dobbins of West Virginia; one brother, Jesse Smith of Timmonsville; three grandsons; eight granddaughters; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Debra Converse of Sumter; and one very special granddaughter and caregiver, Fawn Meggan Hughes of Sumter.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas J. Smith, LL Roy Smith, Harry W. Smith and Alfred E. Smith; three sisters, Ruby Hickson, Ethal Gibbs and Betty Geddings; one stepson, David Michael Converse; one granddaughter, Courtney Paige Converse; and a best friend, Pete Benton of Sumter.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Wedgefield Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Goff and the Rev. Mark Barnette officiating. Inurnment will follow the service in Wedgefield Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors.
