MANNING — A 28-year-old Summerton man was arrested on multiple charges early Friday after crashing his car into a tree and then fleeing the scene in a vehicle he allegedly stole from the Clarendon County Fire Department that had arrived on the scene to render him aid.

Jawwaad Tasawwur Robinson was arrested on charges of grand larceny, possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance (MDMA) and failure to stop for a blue light.

At 3:37 a.m. Friday, Clarendon County emergency personnel were dispatched to 8043 Wash Davis Road in reference to a vehicle accident with fire. According to the Clarendon County Fire Department, fire personnel arriving on the scene found a vehicle that had wrecked into a tree and caught on fire. The driver of the vehicle was then located some distance away from the scene of the wreck. As fire personnel were aiding the driver of the wrecked vehicle, the man reportedly stole a Clarendon County Fire Department pickup and fled the scene.

Deputies, along with help from the Manning Police Department, were able to stop the vehicle. Robinson was treated for injuries sustained in the wreck on Wash Davis Road and then arrested. He was transported to Clarendon County Detention Center, where he awaits a bond hearing.
