Sumter coroner releases identity of victim in fatal hit and run on U.S. 15

Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker has released the name of the woman who died from injuries in a hit and run on  Feb. 28.

Donna Dowd, 59, of Florence, died at a local hospital from injures she sustained after a hit and run on U.S. 15 at about 9:41 p.m. that Friday night, according to Baker.

Dowd was attempting to cross the highway on foot when a vehicle struck her before leaving the scene. South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating, and a description of the vehicle has not been released.

Next of kin has been notified, and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

An investigation is ongoing.
