A Sumter man is in police custody after a domestic dispute in Cherryvale led to a woman being shot.

The disagreement between the couple occurred on Thursday night, Oct. 8, inside a residence on Cheyne Street.

According to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for Sumter Police Department, Robert Lee Young, 35, of Sumter, reportedly shot his 34-year-old partner during the dispute.

The woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment and has since been released.

Multiple children who were inside the home at the time of the shooting were not harmed, according to McGirt.

Young was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, McGirt said. He was booked at Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

An investigation is ongoing.
